During the Heian period Jikaku Daishi, Ennin, discovered a hot spring and used it to steam the linen and weave cloth. During the Edo period, inns known as honjin, were created and adored as prestigous hot spring resorts where feudal lords would visit for therapuetic bathing. After the Meiji period it was introduced as "Aomori's inner sactuary," and was fancied by the world renowned printer maker, Munakata Shikou.
Oshima island of Natsudomari Hantou (peninsula) is a rocky island with a rocky shore to match that can be accessed even during high tides. Straight in front you can see the Mt. Kamafuse on the Shimokita peninsula, as well as the coastline of Mutsu Bay. You will also see the two major peninsulas in the area, Tsugaru and Shimokita. Riding alongside the Natsudomori peninsula, you can witness the daily lives of the local people fishing and harvesting sea ingredients, such as scallops, a big representative of the Mutsu Bay.
Noheji Port, which prospered from the Kitamae ships was once one of the leading commercial ports of Morioka. It connected various parts of Japan to it and bustled with life. The Jyouyatou (similar to a lighthouse) of Noheji was built in 1827 to ensure safe passage for ships operating to and from Zeakan. It is a symbol of the glorious history the city once held as the port for the once prosperous Kitamae ships.
The city of Yokohama located in the central region of Shimokita Hantou is famous for their Nanohana (Canola flower). At the height of their bloom around mid May, the yellow flowers cover the entire field. Nanohana are also sold locally as Nanohana ice cream, and Nanohana honey.
Since the Meiji period, the Ominato has acted as the "Northern Guardian," during strategic and defensive military actions. It is a retro western style building inspired by the former Imperial Japanese Navy, Ominato Naval Base Office Building. From the observation deck that stands approximately 15 meters about ground, you can enjoy a panaramic view of Ominato and the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Vessels. Additionally, it is also popular as a lovely cherry blossom spot.
As the name suggests, Taijima Island in the Shimokit peninsula, is a unique island shaped like a Tai fish (Sea Bream fish). Approximately 800 million years ago, an underwater volcano erupted and the rising lava and ash shaped the island roughly into its current state. The rounded rock body resembling the round body of a Sea Bream and the tail like structure were created by the wave erosion over time.
After taking a picture inside the new ship, "Kakehashi," with designs inspired by the ocean and dolphins, you can step outside and see the wild dolphins swimming alongside you from spring to summer. If you find them at the right time, you can even catch them jumping out of the water. Then, you can witness the breathtaking sight of the two secluded peninsulas on a delightful one hour cruise.
"Top Mast" is a place for rest and information gathering for the cyclists participating in the Mutsuichi challange and will also act as the ending station. From the observation deck you can take in all of Mutsu Bay at once, the other shores and islands, and if the weather is nice even Hokkaido.
Sanai Maruyama Iseki, is one of the World Culture Heritage Sites located in Hokkaido and Touhoku Japan. As a representation of the Jomon period, it offers glimpes into the lifestyles of back then. You will notice the rich diet culture they had, which was sustained by the Mutsu Bay and surroundings mountains towering over. The lifestyle demonstrates a harmonious coexistence with nature that suggests a peaceful life.
